Hawaii - Day 5

This mornings sky was filled with clouds and a breeze blew quite steadily. We realized it would probably be a rainy day, at least for some of the time. We reserved tickets for the boat tour across the water (technically called the East Loch) to visit the war memorial at Pearl Harbour. Our time was at 1:30 PM. We took our time in the morning and headed out in plenty of time - at least we thought we had plenty of time.

A few things we've learned about Hawaii:

  • They dump their old T.V.'s (and other household garbage furniture) almost anywhere at the side of the road
  • Almost every yard has a dog chained up somewhere
  • Almost every yard has a sign warning beware of dogs
  • Many make-shift shelters dot the shore lines - some of these are actually camping areas but I think many of them are "homesteads" to some locals
  • Cats roam about everywhere - the other day I saw about 8 cats in a field next to a "homestead"
  • Chickens roam about
  • The highway system is embarrassingly poor
  • You can drive anywhere and no one honks at anyone
  • No one is ever in a hurry
Some of you will recall the Pro-Bowl was on Sunday, at Aloha Stadium in Pearl City, Oahu. Seemed like everyone on the Island was headed to the football game - and it was directly en-route to Pearl Harbour. The traffic woes even made the local news and I'm sure if you used Google, you would be able to see the traffic chaos.

We eventually got to Pearl Harbour, only to discover they had cancelled all boat tours due to the excessive winds. We were able to re-schedule for the next day. We took the opportunity to check out the museums, the outdoor exhibits and browse the bookstore. One of our children collects key chains so this was on his "must have" list.

We headed back to the condo stopping along the way for some legendary Shaved Ice...

Rob and I choose to try their Ube ice cream...

Yes, it's bright purple. Apparently made from a purple sweet yam and coconut. Although a far cry from chocolate, it goes down OK.
